About Milan Public Utilities

Milan Public Utilities (MPU) is located in Milan, Tennessee, and is owned by the City of Milan. The Department manages the Electric, Water/Wastewater, and Broadband Systems and operates under the authority of the Mayor and Board of Aldermen of Milan, Tennessee. The Electric, Water/Wastewater, and Broadband Systems share top management, customer services, billing, meter reading and accounting. Each system pays its share of these expenses and has its own financial reports.

Due to our goal of outstanding customer service and cost savings, MPU also works with the City of Milan Public Works Department to bill sanitation charges on the utilities bill. By sharing in this billing, we all save on postage, paper, payroll, benefits, and computers while giving the customer the convenience of one-stop service and a single monthly bill.

As a “Public Utility” we answer only to the people we serve. We are For People, Not-for-Profit. Decisions are not influenced by the effects of our stock prices, but rather are based on what is best for our customers. We do not pay dividends to stockholders; instead, we provide lower prices to our customers

Our Public Utilities purpose is to provide reliable, responsive services at a reasonable price while acting as proper stewards of the environment. Local control and responsiveness to the community ensure our purpose will be realized.

We provide electricity that is purchased from the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) and distribute it to the City of Milan and parts of Gibson, Carroll, and Madison counties.

Our water comes from wells that tap the Memphis underground aquifers. This water is purified in accordance with rules and regulations of the Division of Water Supply, Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation. The water quality is closely monitored at our new state-of-the-art Water Plant with the latest in monitoring and control equipment. Milan has the distinction of being the first city in Tennessee to add fluoride to the water supply as a tooth-decay preventative

Our Wastewater Treatment Plant treats domestic and industrial wastewater before discharging it into the Rutherford Fork of the Obion River. The Plant consistently meets or exceeds its National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System permit requirements as set forth by the State of Tennessee.
